In Art Spiegelman’s graphical novel Maus his demonstration of the Holocaust and its recollection in Maus was very emotional, affecting and the most expressing. The approach that the author has taken construes and magnifies the comical shape of telling history. It portrays Spiegelman dialog between himself and his father about his happenings as holocaust and polish jew survivor. These were historical facts which were taken out of context. The Afghan leaders had been resisting the British invasion for decades. It is something that rooted from the past. In another case, the Soviet invasion was to support a hated government which was already facing a massive insurgency. The Afghans bitterly resisted both the British and the Soviet invasions because of their overtly imperialistic nature. Resistance to this form of invasions is definitely not surprising. The American troops, however, was removing an unpopular government, was known to impose democracy and were therefore greeted with support. They were taken as liberators as opposed to being invaders. Had the military history regarding Soviet and British invasions were studied properly, the advisers would have been armed with more realistic reasons to provide a good advice. Studies to Prevent Military from False Visionary Persuasion There are also cases where in because of the lack of understanding of military history, they are easily persuaded by non-military professionals to follow their directions without really knowing the bigger consequences. The tendency of non-military professionals to rely on fragments of the past military history to persuade the military is often a cause of tactical errors. A good example is when Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld cited the German experience in World War II, which showed, he argued, that a partially transformed military could revolutionize warfare (Kagan, 2006). He based his decision primarily on the idea that a partially transformed Wehrmacht with a handful of panzer divisions crushed Poland and France in 1939 and 1940. Rumsfeld’s failure to study the larger picture that the same Wehrmacht   failed to invade Russia in 1941, due primarily to its incomplete transformation. These sorts of looking into fragments of history without studying the totality of the military history had often led military into destruction. Just imagine the useless loss of lives that it can bring. Studies to Provide Military Professional Understanding  and Prevent Errors in the Past from Recurring The main purpose of studying the past is to prevent previous errors from occurring again. The recent US military takeover of Iraq is a good example. If we look at the present situation, many lives were lost already due to the continuing resistance of Saddam supporters. There are continuous attacks and bombing to US military personnel. It should be noted that this will go on forever until a government is properly reinstated and is able to re-institute reforms that would immediately uplift the economic conditions in Iraq. The US military are quite right about the tactics being employed by the Iraqi insurgents, they are using the methods employed by Lawrence of Arabia in 1916-18 against Turkish Rule. The US military believes that by defeating this one method, they will be able to end the ongoing insurgencies. â€Å"It’s the only tool the enemy really has left in order to be able to take us on and cause casualties,† Lt. Gen. James Conway, head of the Operations Directorate at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters in November (Bazzi, 2006). â€Å"And when we defeat that one method, you know, it’s over.† Lawrence would surely disagree with this statement. The military should have recognized that success of Lawrence will repeat again because they are exactly in the same situation. According to Lawrence, a small insurgency with mobility and natural cover would eventually wear down a foreign occupier. This statement is true, and the US military officials should have recognized that this is a no win situation if they will continue to fight the insurgency in the same manner. This is as if that they have never learned from the past, but rather they tried to go against the history. This is just one of the examples where military should have done an in-depth study of the past in order to prevent errors from happening again in the future. Conclusion It is therefore clear that there is a need for military professionals to study military history because of their understanding of the military language. One reason is to provide better understanding for non-military officials who provide critical decisions in times of war. Another reason is to insure that military professionals cannot be easily persuaded by visionaries using only fragments of the past military history to take incorrect actions. Racial Discrimination in the Criminal Justice System Racial conflict is defined as societal controversies related to variances in ethnic, cultural, or national affiliation. Specifically, racial conflict is the result of one dominant cultures control of differing cultures through economics, politics, social policy, and law. In the U.S. juvenile and criminal justice systems, the term racial conflict can be used to refer to discriminatory practices by those who work in the juvenile and criminal justice systems against minority persons (Akers Sellers, 2004). Recent literature expanding the racial conflict concern to include U.S. policy, murder as the result of identity internalizations, and merchant-consumer relationships is not discussed here (Walker et al., 2004). Instead, this paper examines the literature depicting racial conflict as a systemic and controversial topic in the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Body Historical accounts of violent racial conflict have existed since before the 1800s and up to the present day. Likewise, the relationship between racial conflict, crime, and minority processing has been examined (Baldus, Woodworth, 1998). In addition to its explaining why some people commit crime, racial conflict has also been linked to disparate decision-making practices at both the arrest and the punishment stages for ethnic minorities. Specifically, African American males represent the most prevalent minority group at each of these stages. Empirical findings show that disproportionate minority confinement exists partly as the result of police discretion to arrest. Accordingly, minorities, particularly African Americans, find themselves at a disadvantage in the criminal justice system. Recent accounts of racial conflict in the criminal justice system came to the fore during the 1992 riots after a verdict of not guilty was returned for the officers involved in the Rodney King incident in Los Angeles, California. More recently, in 2005, racial conflict was linked to the governments response and policies after Hurricane Katrina in New orleans, Louisiana (Spohn, 2002). Specifically, victims of this natural disaster were outraged at the lack of governmental support and the assignment of the label refugee to American survivors in this largely minority populated area. To some, the use of the term refugee was symbolic of the perception that the survivors were outsiders to begin with. This was seized on by the national media, and the survivors were quickly recast as evacuees. Similar to disparities in the adult justice system, minority disparities in the juvenile justice system exist. Specifically, African American youth, similar to their adult counterparts, are disproportionately represented throughout the system. on one hand, criminologists argue that ethnic and racial minorities commit more crimes than their White counterparts and thereby have greater representation in the system. on the other hand, criminologists and sociologists argue that racial conflict in American society acts interchangeably with the law as a method to control minority power. Thus, as a result, disparities are found in arrest, charge, and confinement of African American youth when compared to White youth who commit the same serious and violent criminal acts. The larger implication here is consistent with the belief that racial conflict is supported and maintained by actors in the juvenile and criminal justice systems (Walker et al., 2004). Racial Conflict and Justice Research on the relationship between racial conflict and crime commission has examined interracial killings, economic and power competition, and disparities within the criminal justice system (Zatz, 2000). Racial conflict has been linked to delinquent behavior by juveniles and has been linked to school violence, juvenile homicide, gangs, theft, and other serious and violent crimes. one of the more engrossing questions facing criminologists and indeed our nation is whether the two justice systems are impartial. Criminologists have studied the relationship between judicial processes and discrimination, and some evidence suggests that ethnic minorities are overrepresented at arrest and, when compared to White offenders, are punished more severely. Similar results were found in examinations of pretrial processes where racial injustices in jury selection and judge bias against minorities were present. Whether or not African Americans and other ethnic minorities are overrepresented in the criminal justice system is not a question here, as official data provide a clear depiction of this disparity (Spohn, 2002). The concern here is, however, focused on why racial disparities continue to exist in the juvenile and criminal justice systems. The existence of conflicts between police and racial/ethnic minorities has historically been related to riots that are often the result of racial conflict. Many researchers argue that juvenile and adult processing of ethnic minorities as the result of racial conflict continues and is maintained by the continuous cycle of analyses, recommendations, and inaction that have resulted in ineffective identification and reduction of racial disparities. Contrary to this argument, other researchers point out that racial disparities exist largely as the result of serious and violent offending patterns of ethnic minorities. Conclusion The literature is filled with options for reducing racial conflict in the criminal justice system. The argument is made that to effectively address racial conflict, research should be conducted at each stage of processing so as to increase the level of accountability of officials and agencies within jurisdictions where racial disparities continue to exist. others stipulate that researchers must identify the problem, change and create policies that effectively address the real concerns, and implement and fund programs dependent upon evaluative measures. At the theoretical level, many criminologists recognize that extensive changes within both the juvenile and the criminal justice systems are needed to address prejudices in the system that exist as the result of policies and practices. Hence, the argument of racial conflict and discrimination in the criminal justice system remains unresolved. Conflict theorists believe racial conflict is the reason for minority differences in criminal and even juvenile justice processing. Even so, differing arguments are presented stipulating that the empirical nature of racism is not measurable and thus is questionable. While there are two dominant opinions, it remains evident that many researchers hold the view that racial disparities as the result of racial conflict continue to exist and should be addressed in juvenile and criminal justice processing.

Henry Ford made many contributions to the American economy during the 1920’s. He was a very skilled and intelligent man at that. Henry was born into an Irish immigrant family on a farm in Wayne County, Michigan. He became Chief engineer of the Edison Company in Detroit during 1888. In 199 he organized that Detroit auto mobile and in 1903 he introduced the ford motor company model T manufactured in 1908. He was believed to sponsor the development of the moving assembly line in 1914. Henry Ford made a major contribution to American society with several things such as the car industry, assembly line, and the way he treated his workers. After several trial of building cars and companies in 1903, Henry established the Ford motor company and introduced the Model T in 1908. During Henrys explosion of success he said â€Å"There are two ways of making money- one at the expense of other, the other by service to one another† (Burg 39). This quote by Henry showed that henry didn’t care about just making money, he cared about giving the people what they wanted then making money of the idea of that. Growing up and understanding the ways of life, I have come to the conclusion that you get absolutely nowhere in life without having a set career that you will love and enjoy. I have come to like various types of careers that I will enjoy and that I am good at as of right now. I would like to start off by telling you all of the careers I would like to acquire. Since I’m good at talking to people and helping them, I have chosen my first choice as a psychiatrist. I, also, love animals and would love to become a veterinarian. Because I want to make a difference and help others, I would like to become a surgeon. I will start off by telling you about each description with various information. I would love to become a psychiatrist. They have everything there is to offer if you shared the same interests as me. They analyze a patient’s medical history from the beginning, their medical allergies, physical condition, and examination results to make sure the patient is to have the most proper attention. They examine patients to obtain information on medical conditions. Most importantly they diagnose their patients with the correct diagnose. The counsel patients and analyze their mental disorder to discuss with psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses and other professionals. The education to become a psychiatrists it is requires to graduate college, get your master’s degree, Ph.D., M.D,, or J.D. The most a psychiatrist will make in a year would be up to a median of $180,000. This occupation employee on an average of 1,700 people in Pennsylvania. From all of the information I shared with you from above, becoming a psychiatrist is definitely number one on my list. What is a veterinarian? A Veterinarian is a doctor who diagnoses and treats diseases and dysfunctions of an animal. They research develop certain things of the animals. They could inspect livestock. Veterinarians exam and determine that diseases or injuries of the animal. Provide care to a wide verity of animals such a horses or exotic birds. They also educate the public about diseases that can be spread from animals to humans. Being a veterinarian seems like a tough job. From having to attend tons of meetings, lectures, conferences, and still having to continue education courses. To becom e a veterinarian you must graduate college, get your master’s degree, Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. you would making between $55,820 and $148,290 a year. In 2008, this occupation employed at least 2,700 people in Pennsylvania. To become a veterinarian would be so wonderful just because I love and care about animals so much. Helping a person is the most important thing a person can do. I don’t know about anyone else but when I help someone it makes me feel so much better about myself just because I know that person is happy because I helped them. That’s why I chose to become a surgeon. There are so many pros to becoming a surgeon. I would say the only consequence on becoming a surgeon would have to be having someone die while they’re in surgery. A surgeon treats diseases, helps the injured and most importantly keeps a person living. They always analyze a patient’s medical history, medication allergies, physical condition, and exam the patient to get the corr ect results before surgery. To become a surgeon you have to have active listening, I think for someone to have active listening is the most important thing just because if you’re not paying attention to one thing a person says, that could mess up your whole surgical procedure. You have to have critical thinking, use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weakness of solutions when it comes to problems. All of the reasons above explain everything I’m good at or at least want to become good at that’s why I want to become a surgeon. While researching all of the possible careers I could acquire I have come to realize that not only is  having a career so important to the society, but you also have to enjoy the career you choose. If you do not choose the career you are fond of you will most likely end up miserable having to go to work every single day. That is why I have chosen three careers, I have about every quality or hope to have that these careers need. I would love to become a psy chiatrist. Becoming a veterinarian would be important to me because I care so much for animals. Also, if I was to become a surgeon it would be a job I would enjoy just because I would be saving lives and helping the common wealth of people. In my perspective of life, it is all about risk. If you are not taking risks and doing something out of the box, you are not having fun, you are just an average ordinary person. As Jane Goodall has always said â€Å"If you really wan t something, and really work hard, and take advantage of opportunities, and never give up, you will find a way. â€Å" I have lived off of that quote because there is always something that everyone wants in life, and if you do not take advantage of your opportunities how are you supposed to accomplish what you want? There is one certain career that I want and I know that I would enjoy and love doing. Growing up I have always had a strong love for animals and I have always wanted to travel to extraordinary places. I could not imagine life without animals; they make the world a better place. Not only do I love just domestic animals, I’ve always have been intrigued by exotic animals. Have you ever wondered how exotic species act in the habitat that you are not familiar with? I think it would be a magnificent job to be an exotic veterinarian traveling the world bringing animals back to health one by one. Since I plan to become an exotic veterinarian there are several of things I will need to accomplish and require before getting licensed. I must have tons of knowledge. For example, you must know biology, customer and personal service, medicine and dentistry, mathematics – arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics; chemistry, English language. Also  the skills that are required to become a veterinarian are as such; science, active listening, critical thinking, speaking, judgment and decision making, also reading comprehension. In my personal opinion everything should be basic knowledge. During my years of high school I should be taking all of the science classes that are available, I should also be taking tons of math courses and all should be hi gher level courses. Because I took higher level courses in high school, once it is my time to attend college I will have the basic knowledge of the classes that I am required to take in order to become an exotic veterinarian. It is required that you have a 4 year bachelor’s degree as well as your veterinarian doctorate degree. Exotic veterinary hospitals also offer residency programs for those interested in specializing in the discipline. Veterinarians must obtain state licensure to practice medicine on domestic, farm and exotic animals. That means that you must pass the Veterinary Licensing Exam in order to become a veterinarian. There are many job offerings to become an exotic veterinarian every year. There are tons of colleges that are recommended for this type of career or occupation. The University of Kentucky is known for what a great veterinarian program that they have. That would be a wonderful university to attend. There are many other universities that are just as g ood as Kentucky University; however that is the college that I want to apply to. Approximately 80 percent of admitted students in veterinary schools are female. Veterinarian came from the Latin word meaning â€Å"working animals†. In the life of an exotic veterinarian working with wildlife animals, every day is a surprise with a new adventure included within the day. Approximately 80 percent of veterinarians work in private clinical practice. Any ordinary veterinary hangs out in an office all day every day with the likely hood of the most craziest thing he/she would do in one day is deworm a dog. The types of countries that I would like to travel would be Africa, Australia, India, etc. I would like to have a life worth living with people recognizing who I am and what great things I have accomplished. The starting salary for a Specialist is US$ 150,000. I would be making tons of money as well as enjoying my job. After researching and finding more and more knowledge about an exotic veterinarian I have become much more aware of the career I would like to  further in. Not only do I have more knowledge but a better understanding of the classes, people, and things I might see and do in the near future. I wouldn’t want to change my career for anything; I have my mind set on becoming and exotic veterinary. I also am much more excited about different information I have come to realize about an exotic veterinary. There is not one normal day in the life of an exotic veterinarian, and that’s what I would want my life to be like. Communication and Visual Literacy Essay

Brian Kennedy’s lecture on visual literacy was very interesting. I’ve never really thought about visual literacy that way. You really don’t realize how you would perceive things in the world if you couldn’t see anything. He says that we learn everything visual first. Then the others things come after that. The more I think about it, the more I believe what he is saying. In our book the definition of visual literacy is the competent creation and consumption of visual messages (Ryan, 2012). Which is a vague fairly vague definition compared to what Kennedy said. Kennedy really dives deep into the subject and drives home the importance of visual literacy. He has you close your eyes and then he asks you to name off some things that are in the room. I honestly couldn’t remember any of these things. It just goes to show you how important it is for us to see things. When we see things we generate assumptions about them, try to interpret them, and we add text to them. So visual literacy can go a long way for us. Visual literacy is definitely a universal language. Kennedy talks about this a little bit in his lecture. There are all kinds of different things we do visually that translate in any culture. Kennedy’s example was a simple wink. When we see someone wink we interpret what it means. It could mean a lot of different things though as well. Hand signals and numbers don’t really change either. I was just in the Dominican Republic and a lot of the locals didn’t speak English. I had to resort to using hand signals to get things I wanted or communicate with them. Most of the time it worked to. It was easier for me to communicate with them visually and basically the only means  of communication I had. So I agree when someone says visual literacy is a universal language. I think visual literacy can impact communication and global understanding. I gave an example in my previous paragraph of how visual literacy impacts communication. That example works here really well too. It impacts communication because we see things first and then we interpret the text, such as body language or hand gestures. They can change how you interpret what someone is saying. It helps with a global understanding because visual literacy is universal. I stated earlier that I though visual literacy was a universal language. When you can’t communicate with some verbally you always turn to visual things like hand gestures.
